the room is spinning

Thursday, July 20th, 2006

My nose isn’t vomiting snot, but the rest of my flu symptoms are here. I did manage to write a search engine and a few pages for the new site though. AAW Sports is next on the to-do list.

Ever start reading a blog, then follow link after link after link until you don’t know why you are still reading? Great way to spend the afternoon. I started at Matt Cutt’s blog, and followed a link to Photomat to the entry about being banned from Google. I went to his front page and found this guy’s list of 25 things He Hates About Google. I was about to go visit the Digg page when I realized I should be working on AAW Sports. And now I’m here writing about things I’ve done today so I don’t feel like I’ve done nothing. Oh yeah, I did some keyword research too.

YAY IT’S RAINING!!! I’m getting tired of this 35°C stuff. Now when will the room stop spinning?

CMS choices

Tuesday, July 18th, 2006

I have flu this week, so I’m working on the relatively thoughtless task of chosing a CMS for the new site, www.imakewebsites.ca. Drupal is amazingly flexible and most of the tools I need for running my site are at my finger tips. I love that it will give me lots of room to expand the site with blogs, forums, polls, comments, and its content categorization is top notch. The template system is nice and simple too. Yet there is something very appealing about my own CMS that I wrote. It is about 10x faster and handles meta tags better, but all it can do is write pages. I’m not sure why I like it so much.

Right now, I’m leaning towards getting the site off the ground with my simple CMS. WordPress here is a better blogging system than Drupal, and scripts are available for just about everything else my CMS could need if I can’t make it myself. Should I need to switch to Drupal, moving content over should not be too hard.

The Joy of Free Zen Cart Templates

Tuesday, July 18th, 2006

About 80% of the traffic coming to my site is looking for Free Zen Cart templates. The experimental Free Yellow doesn’t fit most people’s needs though, so I’ve made a few templates and posted them at my new website. Currently there are 3, and a different one will be available each day.

New Fonts from Microsoft

Tuesday, July 4th, 2006

Thank-you Fadtastic for the article.

Office 2007 and other upcoming Microsoft Products come with 5 new type faces, and one of them is the new default font - bye bye Times New Roman. This is what all the cool kids will be using on their essays and reports next year.

Calibri

Looks nice on screen or in print, but since it comes from Microsoft - you have to pay for it if you want it on your Mac or Linux computer. BLECH!@

This would be a great opportunity for Microsoft to make some friends - web designers are getting tired of using the same 4 fonts on every page. If Microsoft would give these fonts away for use on other operating systems, we’d have a whole bunch of new fonts to use on the web. Not going to happen. None of the other new MS fonts are as nice as Lucida Grande. It would be cool if it was released freely as well, but it would never attain the same circulation as the 5 new fonts that will - they’ll be included with some of the most popular software out there.

Microsoft, you’ve got the power to change the face of the web with these fonts. Please share!
