I recently discovered the joy of ClearType, Microsoft’s font smoothing gizmo that comes with Windows XP.
I’ve tried it many times before, but this is the first time I set it up right for a CRT monitor, and it is simply loverly. Makes me feel like I’m not using Windows. All the Mac’s at school look like this, and many screenshots I’ve seen of Linux have nice smooth fonts as well. I’ve become used to seeing smooth, slightly bold fonts everywhere now.
I decided to turn it off just now and it burns!. Looking at the websites I’ve worked on the past few days, the text is just plain nasty. Parts of this blog are almost unreadable. Trebuchet MS is jagged at certain sizes, and Lucida Grande just looks wrong when sized for body text. Good ol’ Verdana/Arial/Tahoma look just fine. Almost every Windows PC I’ve ever used had ClearType off, and I’ve completely forgotten how 80% of my visitors see my text. Back to the CSS editor!
