Google Services Consolidation

Friday, March 24th, 2006

I use:

All these services, and none of them really feel inked to each other. I’d love to see the big G set up a portal for Webmasters so I could log in and get to my SiteMaps, Analytics, and Adsense all from the same place, maybe even with a search box and link to GMail.

Yes, I’m lazy. I’ll probably write more about this later.

Font Smoothing, ClearType, and Web Design

Friday, March 24th, 2006

I recently discovered the joy of ClearType, Microsoft’s font smoothing gizmo that comes with Windows XP.

I’ve tried it many times before, but this is the first time I set it up right for a CRT monitor, and it is simply loverly. Makes me feel like I’m not using Windows. All the Mac’s at school look like this, and many screenshots I’ve seen of Linux have nice smooth fonts as well. I’ve become used to seeing smooth, slightly bold fonts everywhere now.

I decided to turn it off just now and it burns!. Looking at the websites I’ve worked on the past few days, the text is just plain nasty. Parts of this blog are almost unreadable. Trebuchet MS is jagged at certain sizes, and Lucida Grande just looks wrong when sized for body text. Good ol’ Verdana/Arial/Tahoma look just fine. Almost every Windows PC I’ve ever used had ClearType off, and I’ve completely forgotten how 80% of my visitors see my text. Back to the CSS editor!

OPSEU College Workers Strike

The Ontario budget revealed yesterday that the colleges ran a $50 million surplus in the 2005-06 budget year and are projecting a $38 million surplus for 2006-07. - this page

Yay, there’s money to go around. When does school start?

YesterDaily Goals

Got them all, except I did something else for Asia Yellow. As an added bonus, the next ARCWD may have found a temporary new look.

ToDaily Goals

Subject to change since I haven’t checked my email yet:

  • AsiaYellow - refine that page
  • Next ARCWD - Front Page

  • Toronto Skatepark Map - Missing one or two parks. Then put it online.
  • Radix - Don’t break it more
  • Breakfast!

Toronto Skatepark Map

Thursday, March 23rd, 2006

My favourite skatepark closed for good last fall, mostly because nobody knew about it. To make sure the GTA doesn’t lose another park (and to help me find a new one to ride), I’ve started dropping local parks my own Google map. It’s still too early in production to post, but I’m impressed with Google’s API so far. I barely know JavaScript and have markers and info windows popping up in all the right places.

Right now, the Common Grounds Skatepark is looking good. Hope they are friendly to inline skaters. Cummer Park is usually way to crowded to be safe.

So that’s the morning. Lunch!

UPDATE - Here’s the map

On the first day of Blogging

Wednesday, March 22nd, 2006

I gotta list my accomplishments for the day, otherwise I’ll look back and go “PFFFFTT, what a waste”

  • Heat shrink tubed the battery/ESC control on the Radix
  • Enabled banner rotator on AsiaYellow
  • Several pages of Content for the next ARCWD
  • Several lines of refinement of the CMS for the next ARCWD/Simmons site
  • Probably fixed some Eurobinox stuff

That’s not bad.

Tomorrow I shall:

  • Move CMS refinements to Simmon’s site, send an email
  • That listing page on AsiaYellow could be better designed (I know the one)
  • Finish content for next ARCWD
  • Read some blogs, and leave a comment

Teachers are still on strike, though it looks like something could happen if this binding arbitration thing goes through.
